Chroma Energy completed a 1.8-megawatt solar installation on Mint Road in Maryville in April. The project is a partnership with Silicon Ranch and supplies energy to the Maryville electrical grid. Operators say the new panels will help the Maryville Electric Department meet growing demand for electricity in the burgeoning county.
The solar array located at 3121 Mint Road is Chroma’s first partnership with Silicon Ranch, one of the largest independent power producers in the country.
“By adding renewable capacity to the Maryville Electric Department’s system, the project strengthens grid resilience while reducing reliance on traditional generation sources,” Chroma representatives wrote in a release.
A megawatt is 1,000 kilowatts. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average Southern home uses just under 14,000 kilowatt-hours annually.
Chroma said the project took 18 people about six months to construct and connect to the grid. In a release, Chief Executive Officer Edward Rottmann said the project is personal to the Tennessee-based company.
“This project means a lot to us because it’s right here in our backyard,” he said. “We live and work in East Tennessee, and we take pride in building projects that support the communities we call home.”
